Paul has asked a serious question, aside from his direct thought on the use of CIA drones. Behind that comment is the larger question of how to manager in advance a crisis and whether we can find less costly ways to deal with conflict than either totally standing down or making costly “full court war” ourselves. And yes Paul, there are tools from more careful focused military support to quiet and undercover assistance and actions which can change the playing field. But we need the international community to be more effective and proactive and also use better peacekeeping and peacemaking tools.

Comment on DEFENSE BUDGET (NEW ONE IN THE WORKS, MAYBE) AND PERHAPS A REAL, MODERN, FORWARD LOOKING DEFENSE POSTURE? by Harry C. Blaney III

Sad to say already the defense hawks in Congress and their paymasters in the military-industrial sector and their lobbyists are attacking the DOD proposed budget. according to news reports. Bob sadly was right. Leading the hawks charge are Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) McCain said "We live in an ever increasingly dangerous world and this budget is out of touch with reality."

The problem is that these republicans are responsible for the sequestration cuts which go even deeper than the Hagel proposal. They are also against tax increases which if we are in such danger would from the 1to 2% would help reduce these cuts with real marginal increases at the top and doing away with the tax dodge "carried interest" of the rich Wall Street billionaires. But they rather it be taken from our young and their education including early education, the old from Social Security, Medicare, and from our poor by killing unemployment benefits including our veterans and Medicaid.

Reports also indicate they some Democrats are “lukewarm” in response and many are obsequious to the military establishments in their state especially defense contractors and cuts in Reserves and national Guard. Even the respected Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said he had concerns about the cuts as did Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) But they support the White House imitative that would add $66 billion into the 2015 budgets, split between defense and non-defense areas. But may GOP legislator are wedded to the sequester no matter what the hurt it will cause when it again starts in full in 2016.

What is lacking in the hawks defense of more war spending based on their special interests, not the realities of our world despite their cries we live in dangerous times....which they have contributed to by the Iraq war and getting us into new wars, is not supporting less costly preemptive diplomacy and the U.N. and other international organization that can make a difference on the gound before we reach a real war.

Sanity in spending, sanity of purpose . . . I think we have been missing both for far too long. Now that the pentagon has opted to control spending and waste, we are about to see the strong arm of the forces that Eisenhower warned us of come into play. Weapons mean money, money buys influence, and diplomacy does not put money into people's pockets. We are about to witness a war of wills . . . one of common sense vs. one of monied interests.

Any predictions? If current history is an indicator, bet on the monied interests. Sad, isn't it!
